The early teen years are a time when many kids are taking their first band class or tooling around on a drum set they got for Christmas. Maybe they're learning the school's fight song on the trumpet or trying to top their high score on Rock Band.

But, as Michael Hagerty reports, there's plenty of Texas kids learning an instrument with loftier goals – preserving their family heritage.
