The holidays are perhaps one of the few times these days when we sing songs together. Well, a musical production called called “Sanders Family Christmas,” playing now at Texas Repertory Theatre, hearkens back to a time when that was more common — the 1940s — and centers around the fictional Sanders family of North Carolina, members of which perform in a traveling gospel music show.

Steve Fenley plays family patriarch Burl Sanders. Shondra Marie is busy-body matriarch Vera Sanders. Ted Doolittle plays brother and ex-con Stanley Sanders. Trace Pool is the soon-to-enlist brother Dennis. And Amber Grant plays his mischievous twin sister Denise.

They all stopped by Houston Public Media’s Geary Performance Studio to talk with Catherine Lu about the show, and Fenley describes the inspiration for the characters.
