A Muse and a MazeWhat makes a story compelling? Is it the plot? The characters? The thematic subtext? A clear beginning, middle and end? Conflict and resolution?

There are lots of things a writer might think about while crafting a story – a lot that he or she may want to accomplish while telling the tale. According to creative writing professor Peter Turchi, at the heart of all storytelling are magic, mystery and puzzles to solve. And not just traditional whodunits, but all stories.

Turchi, who teaches creative writing at the University of Houston, explores this connection between puzzles, mystery and magic in his new book A Muse and a Maze: Writing as Puzzle, Mystery, and Magic.

Peter appears Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. at Houston’s Brazos Bookstore.
