The City of Galveston is seeking proposals for two new public arts projects.

The City of Galveston is putting up $70,000 for a project in the downtown cultural arts district and another $30,000 for a project that could go anywhere in the city.

Galveston Cultural Arts Commission Chair Kathleen DiNatale says those projects include both visual art, like a mural or sculpture, or performance pieces; and they especially want to hear proposals from local artists.

"Things that will get people's eye and attention and really at the same time contribute to the vitality of Galveston both in the downtown area and then other areas as well," she said.

DiNatale said that this is a continuous proposal.

"Even if it doesn't go through the first time we're going to be continuing to do this. The good news is the city seems to be wanting to have more and more art. We have a cultural arts master plan in Galveston now."

These would be large projects, DiNatale said.

“The Absolute Equality mural, which is a stunning mural based on commemorating Juneteenth,” she said. “We’re looking for something that’s going to be dramatic, that will really make an impression…. Things that will get people’s eye and attention.”

Money for Galveston's public arts projects comes from the city's hotel occupancy tax.
