Encore Houston

Encore Houston, Episode 53: Apollo Chamber Players

The Apollo Chamber Players present works by Glass, Riley, and two world premieres by Chitravina N. Ravikiran.

Concert with strings, Indian classical artists, and Indian dancers
The Apollo Chamber Players in concert with Chitravina N. Ravikiran, Erode Nagiraj, Robin Kesselman, and dancers from Silambam Houston

Our latest episode of Encore Houston features perhaps the most unique of our performances thus far, with the Apollo Chamber Players joined by special Indian classical music artists Chitravina N. Ravikiran and Erode Nagiraj. Ravikiran performs on a slide instrument also called the chitravina or the Gotuvadyam, and Nagiraj performs on the percussive mrudangam.

Their concert Houston Melharmony presented the 12th of the group’s 20×2020 commissions, with two works inspired by Indian classical music written by Ravikiran. The concert also included additional works by Ravikiran, other Indian composers, and pieces by Philip Glass and Terry Riley. Additional performers were Houston Symphony bassist Robin Kesselman, bharatanatyam dancer Smitha Madhav, and dancers from Silambam Houston.
