Video – Houston Music Highlight: Mariam Haddad & Francesco Attesti

The Houston soprano and Italian pianist perform Bach and more in the Geary Studio.

Houston soprano, Mariam Haddad, and Florence, Italy-based pianist, Francesco Attesti, visited the Geary Performance Studio to perform selections from their upcoming concert, Bach 2 Soul, which explores the intersection of classical music, soul and jazz.

Francesco Attesti performed the "Aria" from Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, which he notes is "one of the most important sets of variations in classical music ever written."

Together, the artists performed an excerpt from the Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, Cantilena by 20th-century Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. As Mariam Haddad explains, "Bachianas Brasileiras is a series of nine suites by Heitor Villa-Lobos, written for various combinations of instruments and voices. They represent a style of Johann Sebastian Bach and are an attempt to adapt a number of Baroque harmonic and contrapuntal procedures to Brazilian music."

Mariam Haddad has been spearheading Bach 2 Soul, a multidisciplinary program that teaches local students classical music and jazz, alongside culture, leadership and innovation in the sciences, in conjunction with the STEM Foundation of the Sound Union Community Development Corporation.

Bach 2 Soul culminates in a concert for the public on Saturday, May 6, 5:30pm in the Houston Community College Auditorium.
