Last month (Feb. 24, 2017), Rice University opened the doors of the new Moody Center for the Arts.

The facility is a hybrid art gallery, theater space, classroom and workshop. Houston Matters producer Michael Hagerty takes us on a tour with the center’s executive director, Alison Weaver.

The building features art gallery space, a black box theater, classrooms, a makerspace/workshop, studio space for artists in residence and space for members of the community to collaborate on the creation of works of art.

Weaver says the building was purposely situated near the busy entrance to campus near University Boulevard and Stockton Drive so it could welcome members of the community in.

“We really do view this as, in some ways, an open-source platform,” Weaver said, “Where we’re able to collaborate across disciplines and across media and across topics to bring people together for conversation around the arts.”

The building is the first of several new additions coming soon to major Houston arts institutions.
