MUSIQA is the star of this week’s episode of Encore Houston. With an emphasis specifically on music from the 20th and 21st century, MUSIQA is among the leading contemporary music organizations in Houston, regularly providing an outlet for the music of living composers. The organization itself was founded by local composers, and its current artistic board consists of Rice University professors Anthony Brandt, Pierre Jalbert, and Karim Al-Zand, as well as University of Houston Professor Marcus Maroney. This concert from April of last year took place in the Hobby Center’s Zilka Hall and presented multiple pieces that were in some way inspired by music from the past, with Timo Andres taking a cue from Brahms, Hannah Lash manipulating traditional formal structures, Rob Smith arranging Bach… sort of, and Marcus Maroney alluding to Ravel.

  • TIMO ANDRES, I Found it By the Sea
  • HANNAH LASH, Around
  • ROB SMITH, Las Pilas
  • SMITH, Angenieta
  • MARCUS MARONEY, Earth Song
  • Performance date: 4/9/2016
  • Originally aired: 3/4/2017
