Tan Dun is unusual composer in that he composes both film and concert music. Like Bartok, Dun uses traditional folk melodies and colors in his compositions, (though Bartok’s influences were Hungarian while Dun’s are Chinese). He has written operas, symphonies, and film scores. His compositions offer depth and color while his melodies are simple and offer wonderful shape.

This weekend we’ll explore two of Dun’s film scores: Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Both scores offer a unique marriage of Western orchestral instruments and traditional Chinese instruments.
