April may just be starting, but Houston is expected to announce its second poet laureate by the end of the month. Maybe you were unaware the city had one, but Gwendolyn Zepeda has held the inaugural role since her two-year term began in April 2013.

There were nine applicants to replace her. Selection criteria include being a Houston resident for at least four years and having a body of published work.

She tells Houston Public Media's arts and culture reporter Amy Bishop about her time as poet laureate, and about how growing up in Houston shaped her writing. Also she reads from her poem After the Hurricane.
