Members of the Houston band The Suffers describe themselves as making "Gulf Coast soul." They're a ten-piece band with horns and woodwinds, keyboards and guitars – all of which blend elements of rock, soul and even reggae to create a sound that often hearkens back to an era before most of them were born.

The Suffers recently visited Houston Public Media's Geary Performance Studio to perform their songs "Giver" and "Make Some Room." And we asked lead singer Kam Franklin to define what exactly is "Gulf Coast soul."
