The Houston Cinema Arts Festival kicks off today. It’ll feature over 50 narrative and documentary films about artists in the visual, performing and literary arts.

One of those films is Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People. Writer and director Thomas Allen Harris says it’s the first documentary to explore the role of photography in shaping the identity, aspirations and social emergence of African Americans from slavery to the present.

Houston Matters’ Maggie Martin spoke with Harris about the film. He says his fascination with photography began at a young age.
