lonestarnation-book-coverIn his new book Lone Star Nation: How Texas Will Transform America, Richard Parker examines how his native Texas has changed dramatically in the last 30 years – and how it’s in the midst of change right now and will continue to be so in the years to come. He notes how the suburbs of Houston in particular may offer an example of political realignment already taking place in the Lone Star state.

It’s a starkly different view of Texas than we heard just two weeks ago from Red State author Wayne Thorburn, the former Texas Republican party executive director.

On this edition of Houston Matters, we talk with author and journalist Richard Parker about Lone Star Nation.

Also this hour: we discuss preparing for the talk. THE talk. The one you dread having with your kids. Of course, yes, there’s more than one; subjects ranging from sex to divorce to health problems to death can be challenging at times for parents to address with children. And what you say, how much you say and when you say it depends on all sorts of factors, from your child’s age and maturity, to the specific situations you and your loved ones might be facing. We talk with a child psychologist and a parenting blogger, both from Houston, about the best way to handle such difficult discussions.

Plus: A conversation with Houston poet André de Korvin. He’s published two collections of poetry called The Four Hard Edges of War and Dreaming Indigo TimeHe’ll read from his works as part of the Public Poetry series this Saturday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Houston Public Library’s Central Library. We hear about his international background and hear some of his poetry in a recent chat with Catherine Lu from Houston Public Media’s arts and culture unit.
