The 2014 Houston Public Media Spelling Bee takes place tomorrow (March 29, 2014). The bee features the top 55 young spellers from more than a thousand schools from East Texas to Austin. They’ll compete for the opportunity to represent Greater Houston in this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

It’s great fun watching these bees and rooting on the young spellers. We don’t, however, give a whole lot of thought to their lives long after the bees are behind them. Houston Matters’ Michael Hagerty reports on Nupur Lala, the 1999 champion. She’s in Houston working on a master’s degree in cancer biology and was featured prominently in the 2002 documentary Spellbound.

Nupur Lala will be one of the commentators for the 2014 Houston Public Media Spelling Bee, which you can see live on TV 8 or online at houstonpublicmedia.org starting March 29 at 2 p.m.
