“In Country”

William Monroe, dean of the University of Houston’s Honors College, discusses the thematic and literary qualities of the 1985 novel In Country by Kentucky author Bobbie Ann Mason.  Not a typical war novel, full of bullets and blood, heroics and horror, the book looks at the painful long-term physical and psychological injuries that linger on, after the fighting has ended.
