Hey, I finally saw a Will Ferrell movie I liked! Yes, this is another animated movie where the villain is the central character (e.g., Despicable Me). Not quite as good as DreamWorks’ previous effort, How to Train Your Dragon, but there’s fun to be had here as blue-tinted Megamind and his fish-like minion, Minion, bump heads with good-guy Metro Man for control of Metro City.
To keep busy between clashes, Megamind kidnaps the Lois Lane figure, Roxanne, at regular intervals. When it seems Mega has defeated Metro Man, he realizes that a villain is no good without an adversary, so he creates another one in Titan. But Titan, however, has his own agenda. Ferrell’s voice characterization is excellent; the 3D effects are very good without being overly intrusive; and Zimmer and Balfe’s score is accompanied by some hard-rock classics (AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, etc., and “Mr. Blue Sky,” the current favorite ELO song to use on a soundtrack). Nothing groundbreaking here, but enjoyable.
