The Front Row – Houston Symphony

Two of the Houston Symphony's principal players, trumpeter Mark Hughes and clarinetist David Peck, chat with us about what it takes to win the Ima Hogg Young Artist Competition! Hughes and Peck were two of the Symphony members who served as judges in the first round of this year's competition, which wraps up with its Finals Concert, Saturday evening at Rice University…

Mark Hughes is the Houston Symphony’s principal trumpet-player. David Peck is the orchestra’s first-chair clarinetist. They were two of the judges in the initial round of the 35th annual Ima Hogg Young Artist Competition, and helped pick the ten semi-finalists who will compete tomorrow at Rice University in the contest’s second elimination. The four finalists who survive that round will perform full-length concertos with the Houston Symphony and guest conductor, Andrew Grams, Saturday evening in the Shepherd School of Music’s Stude Concert Hall, and that closing concert will determine the final rankings of the four winners.  KUHF’s St. John Flynn talks gets thoughts on the competition from Hughes and Peck.  Listen Download
