DVD Review: “The Kinks in You Really Got Me: The Story of the Kinks”

(ABC Entertainment. 1 hour, 27 minutes. Unrated.)

I wouldn’t call this The Story, just a (slapped-together) story of the famed British Invasion band’s long career from the ’60s to the ’90s. Most of the hits are here (“All Day and All of the Night,” “Tired of Waiting For You,” “A Well-Respected Man,” “Sunny Afternoon,” “Come Dancing”) but mostly heard in snippets. There are no real interviews, just sound bites from frontman/songwriter Ray Davies, brother Dave and a few of the others who were in the band over the years. Almost none of the clips are identified, and they’re of wildly-varying quality; editing is poor. These Rock- and-Roll-Hall-of-Famers deserve a “well-respected” comprehensive documentary; this isn’t it, although some Kinks is better than none. I hope we don’t have to wait as long as Ray’s oft-threatened Kinks reunion.
