Maestro Larry Rachleff talks about the season-opening concerts by the Shepherd School Symphony and Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra, both of which he will conduct this weekend at Rice University. Larry Rachleff is Hubert Professor of Music at Rice University, and Director of both of the Shepherd School of Music’s large orchestral ensembles. He leads the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra in works of Beethoven, Ravel and Brahms Friday AND Saturday night at 8:00PM in the Shepherd School’s Stude Concert Hall. Tickets for those performances may be purchased by calling 713-348-8000. Actress Veanne Cox plays Muriel Halstead, a fictional survivor of the 1900 Galveston Hurricane … in the one-character play, A Disaster Begins, scripted and directed by Ain Gordon. The two artists present their drama this Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 8:00PM in the Performance Space at DiverseWorks and the chat about the work with TFR Producer Bob Stevenson. KUHF’s Meghan Hendley, speaks with Houston playwright, John Harvey, whose new drama, Night of the Giant, is being presented by the Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company.  This World Première production features Houston actors Walt Zipprian, Amy Warren and Jennifer Decker and an original score by local composer, Elliot Cole.  There are performances this Friday and Saturday night at 8:00PM at the Ovations Night Club.
