We meet award-winning Houston composer, pianist, and Shepherd School of Music alumnus, Randolph Partain. He shares tracks from his new CD, Mysteries, a collection of original contemplative pieces for solo piano…

Julio Martinez is the harpist with the band that bills itself as “The World’s Greatest Mariachi,” the 112-year-old Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. As part of its 2009 summer tour of Texas, sponsored by Fiesta Mart and Goya Foods, Mariachi Vargas performs tomorrow evening at 7:30PM in the Brown Theater of downtown Houston’s Wortham Center. The opening act on the concert is another of our guests, 19 year-old Odessa, Texas, native, Esteban Velasquez, who won the title, “Best Mariachi Vocalist in the United States,” in a competition held two years ago by Mariachi Vargas. Joining us also in KUHF’s Geary Performance Studio was Laura Muñoz of Muñoz Public Relations, the promoter of Mariachi Vargas’s Texas tour. Composer and Pianist Randoph Partain chats with KUHF’s Chris Johnson about his CD, Mysteries. It’s a compilation of meditative works for solo piano that began life at the request of several congreagation members of Lord of Life Lutheran Church where Partain is Minister of Music. The CD is available for purchase from his website. Listen. Download.
