Probing the Passion Story: Musical Settings by Handel and Bach is the title of the series of three lectures that Dr. Michael Marissen, Professor of Music at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, is presenting here in the Bayou City, under the auspices of the Houston Seminar. He delivers the second of those talks, Hostility toward the Jewish Neighbor in the Passion Settings of Bach and Handel, tomorrow evening at 7:00PM at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Dr. Marissen’s concluding address is specifically an introduction to Handel’s Passion after Barthold Brockes, and will be given Sunday afternoon at 5:00PM at Christ the King, to be followed at 6:00PM by the Bach Society of Houston‘s first performance of the work. The soloists, chorus, and orchestra, conducted by Artistic Director, Albert LeDoux, perform the piece again on Good Friday, April 10th P-M. Marissen and LeDoux speak with KUHF’s St. John Flynn. Detria Ward and Cynthia Brown are two of the five actresses who portray various aspects of the personality of Ida B. Wells, the pioneering civil-rights, universal-suffrage and anti-lynching activist who lived from 1862 to 1931 in the cuurent Ensemble Theatre production of Tazewell Thompson’s play-with-music, Constant Star.
