Film Review: “High School Musical 3: Senior Year”

(Buena Vista Pictures. Rated G. 1 hour, 40 minutes. Directed by Kenny Ortega.) Zac Efron (Troy), Vanessa Hudgens (Gabriella), Corbin Bleu (Chad), Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay), Lucas Grabeel (Ryan), Monique Coleman (Taylor). Songs by various composers from the Disney music department.

Those of the female persuasion will swoon and then laugh at the first shot of the first scene in this movie. Would that the rest of the proceedings were as fun. I liked it, but much of it (both story and songs) felt like HSM2 retread. This was the first time I’d seen a HSM installment with an audience; it consisted mostly of mothers and their 6- and 7-year-old kids. I thought there’d be more of the junior-high set. Another thing I don’t get: there are fewer romantic scenes between the gorgeous Troy and the lovely Gabriella than in HSM2. Hmm. I guess they’re trying to hold onto that G rating. Well, let’s face it, what we critics think doesn’t really matter. The movie’s already broken the weekend-opening record for any musical. Go, Wildcats!
