Film Review: “Body of Lies”

(Warner Brothers Pictures. 2 hours, 8 minutes. R for strong violence including some torture, and for language throughout. Directed by Ridley Scott.) Leonardo DiCaprio (Roger Ferris), Russell Crowe (Ed Hoffman), Mark Strong (Hani Salaam), Golshifteh Farahani (Aisha). Music by Marc Streitenfeld.

Body of Lies follows Roger Ferris, a CIA agent in Iraq who is working to take down terrorist leader Al Saleem. With the help (and occassional hindrance) of his CIA handler Ed Hoffman (played by a beefed-up, crew-cut Crowe), Ferris sets up a fake terrorist cell in order to draw Saleem out. Body comes from a good pedigree, as it’s directed by Ridley Scott, written by William Monahan (who adapted The Departed), and based on a novel by David Ignatius, associate editor and columnist for the Washington Post. While it doesn’t quite live up to the hype, it is still a good, solid political thriller. While the movie concerns modern politics and current events, it does a good job of not beating you over the head with either. The plot gets a little murky in places, but is otherwise very twisty and smart, even if the ending seems a tad implausible. The chemistry between Crowe and DiCaprio is very strong, with DiCaprio’s hot-headed Ferris playing well against Crowe’s drawling, detached Hoffman. Mark Strong, who plays the alternately suave and scary Jordanian intelligence head Hani Salaam, comes close to stealing the whole movie. Ferris falls for Muslim nurse Aisha (played by the lovely Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani), but the whole affair feels like a contrived plot point, although the social and political hindrances to such a relationship are compellingly presented. A suspenseful, surprisingly non-preachy thriller.
