DVD Review: “Things We Lost in the Fire”

(Dreamworks. 118 minutes. 1 Disc. Color. Widescreen. Rated R. Directed by Susanne Bier.) Halle Berry, Benecio Del Toro, David Duchovny, Alexis Llewellyn, Micah Berry, John Carroll Lynch. Music by Johan Söderqvist.

First English-language effort from Danish writer-director Bier is well-done but depressing. Berry plays Audrey, who along with her two young kids, is trying to cope after husband Brian (Duchovny, seen in flashbacks) is killed while trying to assist in a streetside domestic dispute. Del Toro is Jerry, Brian’s childhood friend and a recovering heroin user, who ends up moving in with Audrey and the children while trying to turn his life around. Good acting, especially from Del Toro, and a thoughtful script, but I have to ask: would any woman with young children let a heroin addict live with them – even if he’s your dead husband’s friend – unless the woman’s got an ulterior motive? Check this out if that question intrigues you, but otherwise, it’s a downer. Extras include deleted scenes and featurettes.
