Film Review: “Vantage Point”

(Sony Pictures. 90 minutes. Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense violence and action, some disturbing images and brief strong language. Directed by Pete Travis.) Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Edgar Ramirez, Zoe Saldana, Ayelet Zurer, Eduardo Noriega, Said Taghmaoui.

Eight strangers with eight different points of view try to unlock the one truth behind an assassination attempt on the President of the United States (Hurt), soon after his arrival at a global summit in Spain. At the scene are two Secret Service agents (Quaid, Fox); an American tourist (Whitaker) with, of course, a video camera; an American video producer (Weaver). The gimmick is that we see more and more of what happened with each “rewind” – cleverly done, and there are good action scenes, but it’s pretty obvious who the bad guy is early on. And after the movie’s over, the gimmick is all you remember.
