DVD Review: “Perry Mason: Season 2, Volume 2”

(CBS/Paramount. 1959/2007. 4 Discs. Not Rated. 774 minutes. Various directors.) Raymond Burr, William Hopper, Barbara Hale, Ray Collins, William Talman.

Order in the court! It’s another welcome release of the second half of season 2 starring the exploits of Los Angeles’ most successful defense attorney. Both Burr as Mason, and Hale as faithful secretary Della Street, won Emmys this season for their roles. We don’t mean to overlook the reliable work of Hopper (as P.I. Paul Drake), Collins (as Police Lieutenant Tragg), and Talman (as long-suffering D.A. Hamilton Burger). Some of the plots get a little convoluted, but the episodes are still worth watching. Among other familiar character actors, look for a young Marion Ross (Mrs. C from Happy Days) as an heiress taken in by a con man in The Case of the Romantic Rogue. As usual for Paramount, no extras. Someone call the law.
