DVD Review: “The Streets of San Fransisco, Season One, Volume Two”

(Paramount. 1973/2007. 4 discs. 675 minutes. Not Rated. 13 episodes. Various directors.) Karl Malden, Michael Douglas.

The boys are back in town, keeping the rolling hills of the Bay City safe for democracy. The plots often center on Malden, with one episode involving his daughter in danger, and another with an old-girlfriend-turned-socialite (Barbara Rush) seeking her husband’s murderer. Other guest stars include Hollywood vets Joseph Cotten, Jack Albertson, Leslie Nielsen, Stuart Whitman, and many more. Standout episode is the Emmy-nominated The House on Hyde Street with an elderly man (Lew Ayres) living in the neighborhood haunted house…where a kid turns up dead. The whole thing’s very Collyer Brothers. Picture and sound quality are excellent, all the better to check out the flared pants Michael’s still wearing. Let’s hope Paramount continues to release more of these Quinn Martin shows (where’s Barnaby Jones?).
