DVD Review: “What About Brian: The Complete Series”

(Buena Vista Home Entertainment. 2006. 5 Discs. 1,024 minutes. Various directors.) Barry Watson, Matthew Davis, Rosanna Arquette, Rick Gomez, Amanda Detmer, Sarah Lancaster, Raoul Bova.

From the producers of Lost and Alias comes a contemporary ensemble show set in El-Lay about a group of supportive friends in various stages of romantic relationships and friendships. There are the just-married Nic (Arquette) and Angelo (Bova), the seemingly happily married Dave (Gomez) and Deena (Detmer) and the newly-engaged Marjorie (Lancaster) and Adam (Davis). But — what about Brian? He’s the single guy who can’t commit. Not much new here: if you watched Thirtysomething in the ’80s, you’ve seen this show, but a good cast makes it watchable. A few nods to the 21st century are evident (like the speed-dating episode). Barry Watson is in the Peter Horton role; he’s sexy and appealing, which makes his dilemma about finding the right woman more puzzling than entertaining. The series ended without all the storylines being resolved, and among the DVD extras is a featurette which explores what might have happened in season 3.
