DVD Review: “Vacancy”

(Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. 2007. 1 Disc. Color. Widescreen. 85 minutes. Rated R. Directed by Nimrod Antal.) Luke Wilson, Kate Beckinsale, Frank Whaley, Ethan Embry. Music by Paul Haslinger.

Director Antal’s an American who just returned to the U.S. after living and working in Hungary for many years…his biggest success was the Hungarian thriller Kontroll. His first American feature isn’t on that level. The premise had potential (a bickering, stranded couple – Wilson and Beckinsale – end up staying at a place that makes the Bates Motel look classy…while watching TV, they realize that the slasher movies they’re been watching were filmed in the very room in which they’re staying). Whaley is your Norman Bates for the evening. Has its moments, but pretty much peters out by the end…at 85 minutes, the movie seems longer. Extras include a making-of doc, extended versions of the TV slasher movies (if that’s your thing), and deleted scenes.
