DVD Review: “WKRP in Cincinnati: The Complete First Season”

(20th-Century Fox. 1978-79/2007. 4 Discs. 22 episodes. Various directors.) Gary Sandy (Andy Travis), Gordon Jump (Arthur Big Guy Carlson), Howard Hesseman (Dr. Johnny Fever), Loni Anderson (Jennifer Marlowe), Tim Reid (Venus Flytrap), Richard Sanders (Les Nessman), Frank Bonner (Herb Tarlek), Jan Smithers (Bailey Quarters).

Rarely has a DVD release so divided the public! Half curse the music editing, and half are just glad the series is finally out. I can see both viewpoints…when the series went into syndication, many of the rock songs were replaced with bad, generic filler (so Fox could avoid paying the music rights), and unfortunately these edited shows are what we are stuck with on this release. I’ve watched all the episodes and I did miss the original music a number of times (most pointedly the absence of “Hotblooded” in A Date with Jennifer). A rock and roll station is supposed to have rock and roll music, folks. Edited WKRP is better than none at all, but enough fans are screaming over the absence of Pink Floyd, the Stones, etc., that I hope Fox takes some of that interest money from Star Wars and shells out for the rights for the original songs for Season 2.
