DVD Review: “Turistas (Unrated)”

(20th-Century Fox Home Entertainment. 2006. Color. 1 Disc. Widescreen. Theatrical version: 93 minutes. Unrated version: 95 minutes. Rated R. Directed by John Stockwell.) Josh Duhamel, Melissa George, Olivia Wilde, Desmond Askew, Beau Garrett, Max Brown, Agles Steib, Miguel Lunardi. Music by Paul Haslinger.

Rising star Duhamel (TV’s Las Vegas) heads up a group of young American and European backpackers who find themselves stranded on a remote Brazilian beach. Life’s pretty good at first, with plenty of wine, women, and song. But, after a night of partying, the wayward young’uns are drugged and robbed, and their dream vacation becomes a gruesome nightmare. Soap opera fans will also remember Duhamel as Leo du Pres on All My Children; he also played the title role in 2004’s middling comedy Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! I’d call Turistas middling in the currently-popular disembowelment genre. Both the theatrical and unrated versions are on this disc; I wasn’t motivated to find out what was on the extra two minutes. Kudos to the cinematographer, though, for the gorgeous beach vistas and stunning underwater sequences. Kinda makes you want to take the first plane to Brazil…that is, if you could get a guarantee you’d come back with all your body parts. Extras include a special effects featurette and deleted scenes.
