DVD Review: “Rocky (2-Disc Collector’s Edition)”

(MGM Video, 1976/2006. Widescreen. 2 Discs. 120 minutes. Rated PG.) Directed by John G. Avildsen. Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, Burgess Meredith. Music by Bill Conti.

Yo, people: Rocky can still go the distance…come out a winner…deliver a knockout punch. OK, I’m finished with the cliches. With Rocky Balboa now in theaters, it’s a good time to revisit what started it all and became the Best Picture winner of 1976. The Rock still has a dopey charMühere; his scenes with Adrian are still touching. Most surprising after all these years: Bill Conti’s music really works. Loads of extras, including all-new commentary by Stallone, and a little book which is a kind of preview to a larger companion volume (sold separately) called Rocky: The Ultimate Guide. By the way, this specially-marked package includes a coupon for a free ticket for the new film.
