VA to Focus on Women Vets

The Houston VA is getting more than $12 million for health care services. It includes establishing a mental health unit exclusively for women veterans. Mental Health Care Line Acting Deputy Director Anna Teague says the medical profession still has a lot to learn about post traumatic stress disorder and other combat related illnesses in women.

"We don't have a whole lot of experience because we've not had women in direct combat in the past. So this unit and the outpatient unit, which will be attached to the unit, will be an area where we can explore if the women are affected differently than men when it comes to combat related trauma."

It's estimated that by 2010 women will make up 14 percent of the total veteran population. Capella Tucker, Houston Public Radio News.
