Improving Childrens Health, Safety and Education

People who work daily for children's issues are assessing what still needs to be done. Houston Public Radio's Capella Tucker reports.

Health, safety and education are just some of the areas being reviewed. One issue at the front is the controversy at the Texas Youth Commission. Children At Risk President Bob Sanborn says the number of children sent to TYC did increase last year.

"We'll see what happens this year. We're part of the reform of TYC.ξ Misdemeanors may no longer go there as well as kids over the age of 19 do not go there.ξ So we'll probably see a dip, but I'm not necessarily sure that that means it's better for some of those reasons."

Sanborn says poverty and hunger are top concerns. He adds that schools need to start looking to the younger grades to prevent dropouts. Capella Tucker, Houston Public Radio News.
