Keeping Houston Crime Down

Violent crime numbers are down in Houston and Mayor Bill White is looking for that trend to continue during his last term in office. Houston Public Radio's Capella Tucker reports.

Violent crime has come down eight-point-six percent since 2003, but Mayor White says more needs to done ... not only with violent, but with non-violent as well.ξ White says efforts are underway.

"Number one of which is getting more people on the ground ... for burglery and theft ... get that number down."

Last fall, a plan was announced to add officers through a combination of overtime programs and additional academies.ξ The police chief at that time also set a goal for reducing crime numbers during the next couple of years.ξ Capella Tucker, Houston Public Radio News.
