Revels Houston presents the 2007 Christmas Revels, an American celebration of the winter solstice.

Revels performances blend song, dance, and drama into a celebration that demonstrates how cultures around the world are fed by the same great river of myth, story and song. This year's performances take place on December 8th, 9th, 15th & 16th.

Revels performances blend song, dance, and drama into a celebration that demonstrates how cultures around the world are fed by the same great river of myth, story and song. Revels is a living tradition bonding all participants -- audiences, performers, and volunteers -- together as companions in celebration. Revels comes from the community, for the community.

This year's Christmas Revels celebrates the customs and traditions of America's early immigrants and of African Americans and Native American peoples. We celebrate the music and dance of Appalachia, singing of the northern and southern harmony and the African-American holiday tradition of Jonkonnu, a Christmastime festival originally celebrated by slaves in the 19th century. Some concert-goers might even feel compelled to join in the songs and dances of the "Shaking Quakers," and everyone will be captivated by this early American celebration with its lively folk and gospel music that will surely set their spirits high and toes-a-tapping!

Featured performers include 'Shape note' singer and teacher Suzannah Park who is joined in song by African American singer Paulette Labbe-Chiasson. Adopted Pawnee storyteller Roxanne Solis-Price will bring audience members stories of the original peoples of this land. Musicians Eden MacAdam-Somer, Larry Unger, Peter Suk, Conrad MacRoberts and Dan Witschey—playing banjo, fiddle, whistle, harmonica, guitar, drum and bass—will accompany the choral ensemble filling the darkness of winter with colorful music and dance.
