Harris County Adds to Potential Jury Pool

Harris County is using a new jury wheel with about 200,000 more names on it. As Houston Public Radio's Laurie Johnson reports, the new wheel means even if you've already served on a county jury recently you could get called again.

The last jury wheel had 2.5 million names on it. That was two years ago. This wheel has 2.7 million names, and all of them are eligible to be called in for jury duty in the district and county courts. Harris County District Clerk Theresa Chang says if you are 18 years or older and have a Texas driver's license or ID you will be in the pool, even if you're not a registered voter.

"If you want justice and you want your judicial system to work, this is really your chance to serve when you are called to serve on the jury summons."

Harris County calls approximately 13,500 jurors every week. And because this new wheel sort of resets the system, if you've been called in the past six months you could get called again when the new wheel goes into effect on November 5th.

"So maybe you're so lucky to be called again. Now think of this. Once you've been called, for the next two and a half years you should not be called."

But keep in mind this jury wheel only applies to county and district courts, so even if you get called up soon in this jury pool, you're still eligible for the municipal and federal jury pools as well. Laurie Johnson, Houston Public Radio News.
