HISD Superintendent Abe Saaverdra announced a final list of proposed 134 renovations and 24 new schools. Saavedra says this $805 million bond package is the third part of a plan that began back in 1998.
"HISD embarked on a plan to improve every school in the district over the course of three successive bond programs that would stretch more than a decade."
Saavedra says the school district considered input from six public meetings.
"After listening long and hard to the community, we already have made a number of revision to the bond program."
Saavadra spoke at Jackson Middle School, which he says is in need of renovation.
"Jackson Middle School is 82 years old. This school was built before the Great Depression. The independent outside experts came into this building and studied it carefully, and determined that this school needs an influx of $16 million to bring it up to acceptable standards."
Opposition has come from some neighborhoods upset that schools in their communities are being closed. The bond election is set for November 16th. Ed Mayberry, Houston Public Radio News.
