Tomorrow night is National Night Out. The annual event on the first Tuesday in August is a way for people to get to know their neighborhoods and work together to prevent crime. Houston Public Radio's Rod Rice reports.

Many neighborhoods plan organized efforts. Houston police chief Harold Hurtt says National Night Out activities are very popular here.

"Last year, because of the turn out the participation of citizens in Houston and Harris County, as far as the number of communities and the number of people who participated, Houston/Harris County came in number-2 in the country."

Chief Hurtt says in a multi-cultural city like Houston, National Night Out brings people together.

"In the Houston/Harris County area 90 different languages are spoken, but on August one we'll all be speaking in one language. And that message is no crime, no drugs in our communities."
