Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Discusses Immigration Reform

With President George Bush in Laredo visiting an illegal crossing hot spot, local leaders were gathering in Houston at the request of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee to discuss immigration reform. Houston Public Radio's Capella Tucker reports.

More than two dozen groups met in the Congresswoman's office. While there was a wide variety of opinion, most seem to have come to the conclusion that an immigration reform bill before November is unlikely. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee ...

"A good bill takes a longer period of time then the election. Another theme is that the momentum is here and we are not going to let up. We're still formulating a position but I think those that are pushing the momentum are going to continue registering voters, making elected officials realize this is an important issue."

Jackson Lee says the legal immigration system needs reform also. She adds there's an opportunity to address other issues surrounding immigration including job training, job creation and minimum wage. Capella Tucker, Houston Public Radio News.
