The units were formed less than three years ago to go after sexual predators who have slipped through the cracks of the criminal justice system. It has three parts. The first, the fugitive unit, targets sex offenders who are in violation of parole. Attorney General Gregg Abbott says the second, the missing predator unit, goes after offenders who have not registered as required.
"Typically it's failing to register when they relocate. When they come out of prison they typically do register like they are required to do so. But you know also they may be going through a probation officer at that time anyway. But it's typically after they move. These are not people who typically when they come out of prison buy a house and settle down for 25 years."
Failure to register as a sex offender is a third degree felony and violators could get two to ten years. The third group is the cyber crimes unit. Investigators assume the identity of underage teens in Internet chat rooms which leads to child predators. Capella Tucker, Houston Public Radio News.
