Historic Houses Open for Candlelight Tour

The Houston Heritage Society is hosting the 43rd annual Candlelight Tour of its historic homes in Sam Houston Park this weekend. The old homes are decorated for Christmas, and this is a chance to see how Houstonians celebrated Christmas in the 19th century.

Sam Houston Park is the city's oldest public park, with nine historic structures that date from 1823 to 1905. They include eight fully maintained old homes, which for the Christmas Candlelight Tour, are decked with boughs of holly and trimmed with traditional 19th century decor. Heritage Society spokeswoman Cassidy Gallaher says with thousands of candles lighting them up it's a real taste of Christmas past.

All the old homes save one will be open for the Candlelight Tour. The one that's not is the Pillot House, which was damaged by the flooding in Tropical Storm Allison four years ago. Gallaher says the Pillot House is -almost- fully repaired.

Gallaher says the Candlelight Tour has storytellers, childrens' choirs and Heritage Society members in 19th century clothing serving as hosts and hostesses. The old houses will be open this evening and Saturday evening from 6:30 pm till 9:30 pm, and there's an admission fee.
