Most parents know that toys with small parts are dangerous for children under two. But there are many toys that seem safe and really aren't. Luke Metzger with the Texas Public Interest Research group says some toys contain toxic chemicals or parts that break off. Another concern is toys that are too loud.
Parents can place duct tape over the speakers on loud toys, or simply remove the batteries. Parents often focus on safety for younger children and may forget there are dangerous toys for older children as well. Doctors at Texas Children's Hospital warn about the risks of pocket bikes, motorized scooters and even trampolines. Texas Children's treats between seven and eleven injuries every month from trampoline accidents.
