Temporary Health Insurance

An insurance company says it is significantly reducing its rates for temporary health insurance. Houston Pubic Radio's Rod Rice reports that United Healthcare is making the reductions in specific zip codes as a way to help the victims of hurricane Katrina.

Randy Giles is the CEO of United Healthcare of South Texas. He says the price reductions are for temporary health insurance policies that can be purchased for periods of one to six months.

Giles says the benefit of the product is that while here Louisiana residents will have access to the entire United Healthcare network of providers. He says the price reductions are significant and vary based on the benefits a customer choices.

While the motivation is to help Katrina victims, United Healthcare is making these reduced cost temporary policies available to anyone in zip codes that begin with 770 through 775. Giles says temporary health insurance is not designed for permanent residents of Texas.
