About 85 employees of Dominion Exploration and Production are building, raking, cleaning and gardening at the Sims Bayou Urban Nature Center. The center sits on an acre of land backing onto Sims Bayou and is part of a parcel of land once owned by John Harris, who founded the town of Harrisburg, leading to the eventual formation of Harris County. Dominion's David Linger says his Houston team has been developing this site for three years.
This year the projects include a viewing platform with wheelchair access and an aviary. The Houston Audubon Society runs the center and needs the aviary to house injured birds. Mary Ann Weber with the society says it would take months or even years to raise the funds necessary for these projects.
The Sims Bayou Urban Nature Center is open to the public and is located on River Drive just east of the Gulf Freeway.
