Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott says every day across Texas, domestic violence victims face both physical and emotional trauma
"There are almost 200,000 claims of domestic violence each and every year. The list of those captured includes four known gang members, and also a man from the list of Harris County most wanted fugitives."
Abbott, who wants to be Texas' next governor, was joined by Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson.
She too is seeking to be elected outright to the office held by her late husband Mike Anderson.
She says domestic violence has a far reaching impact, especially on the children who are in the home and witnessing the violence.
"In 2013, we filed more than 10,500 domestic violence cases. That number unfortunately has remained steady over the last two years. Harris County has the highest number of domestic violence fatalities in the state, there 30 in 2012."
She says part of her office's priority includes helping the victims who are taken from harm's way.
"Every year, we service over 7,000 people who have been affected by domestic violence. We give them guidance and resources to enable them to get out of dangerous situations."
Both Abbott and Anderson say the message is clear: Domestic violence will not be tolerated in Texas.
