The inspiration for David Bintley’s Aladdin was not the Disney animated movie, or even the traditional British pantomime, but rather the tale contained in the epic story collection One Thousand and One Nights, or The Arabian Nights. As Aladdin and his mother are Chinese immigrants living in “Araby,” Bintley introduced elements of Chinese dance into the work alongside more traditional classical ballet movement.
After the premiere of the work in Houston, Houston Ballet will perform Aladdin on tour in Chicago at The Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University March 22-23, 2013.
Aladdin is onstage in the Wortham Center’s Brown Theatre through March 2nd. For more information visit Houston Ballet online.
