The analysis by insurance company Travelers found that strains accounted for more injuries than the next two largest causes combined. The number two and three causes — respectively, sprains and fractures — tended to be sudden injuries, the results of accidents.
Stacey Johnson is risk control director in Travelers’ Houston office.
“Strains occur mainly because of repetitive motion type of things, things that happen over a long period of time. So it could be something where someone is, possibly, doing something where they’re reaching up or they’re lifting on a regular basis.”
Workers compensation policies can be particularly expensive for small businesses. But Johnson says such businesses can find themselves exposed to lawsuits and potential bankruptcy, if they do not have such insurance in place.
Texas is currently the only state that allows private sector employers to opt out of purchasing workers compensation insurance.
