How Much Did The Candidates For Texas Governor Raise So Far?

Besides unveiling the combined $12.2 million dollar haul, the Wendy Davis for Governor Campaign also said she collected donations from 71,000 contributors from in and out of Texas.

Bill Miller is a political strategist based in Austin.

"Twelve million is a lot of cash, and she's done it you know, in a relatively short period of time. So to her credit, she took advantage of this sort of 'bell in ball' moment for her, and people are enthusiastic about it and are writing checks."

Miller says he expects Abbott's camp to use the campaign deficit as motivation.

"What I would do if I were them is, I would take her number and I would send it around to all the Republican givers and say, 'She's doing really well. She's going to be aggressive, she's going to be formidable; you need to write another check to us."

Professor Mark Jones of the Baker Institute at Rice University says the padded coffers will certainly be put to good use.

"The money allows both candidates to buy the best talent out there, who will be working as hard as they can, to spin every message and every event in favor of their candidate. Keep in mind that it costs approximately $2 million dollars a week, to do a good, strong statewide ad buy."

Both campaigns have been given sizable contributions from individuals. Wealthy Houston trial lawyer Steve Mostyn and Fort Worth billionaire Sid Bass to Davis, while Abbott's supporters include Houston Texans owner Bob McNair and former Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane.
