The use of fireworks to celebrate July 4th or New Year's has risen dramatically in the past 30 years. It went from 41 million pounds in 1980 to over 270 million pounds in 2012.
Top Dog Fireworks is a big fireworks provider in Texas. All their stores are operated by non-profits like churches and high school booster clubs, to help them raise funds every year.
Justin Smith is band director at Cypress Springs High School and helps run the warehouse in Northwest Harris County.
"The biggest benefit from this fundraiser is that we're able to keep the dues that the students pay very low. We charge among the lowest dues in the entire district for band. We use a lot of the money for instruction. We offer lessons, scholarships to students, and then we use some of the funds for equipment. We're able to buy new equipment that the school district can't do."
The money they earn is also used to help offset the cost of expenses. Students are required to work a certain number of hours and at the end of the season, the company makes a donation to the high school booster club.
Smith says students become experts on the fireworks they sell.
"We get training from the owners, and then the adults that operate the store, myself, the rest of my staff, and the other booster club parents, we train the students to what the laws are, where people can and can't shoot, and then we do product training on different items, so the customers have an idea of what they're paying for. And, as long as everybody's safe and they're shooting in the right area at the right time, we're all good."
The sale of fireworks for the New Year continues until midnight January 1st.
